Rats in the Loft

Scratching at night, droppings and gnawed insulation or cables are signs to investigate.

Check the roof line

Look for gaps at the eaves, damaged roof tiles and openings around soffits.

Trace other entry routes

Check pipe and cable entries. Climbing plants and overhanging branches can offer routes towards the roof.

Arrange trapping and advice

Contact a pest controller or check your local council for help with trapping and removal.

Check gnawed cables

Ask an electrician to inspect damaged wiring. Include insulation damage in the pest controller's inspection.

Repair entry points

Plan sealing with your pest controller after removal. Repair gaps around eaves, soffits, roof tiles and service entries.

Clean up with care

Never sweep or vacuum droppings. For a loft full of droppings, arrange professional cleanup.
