UK buyers need a current UK offer, reservation terms and approval information before treating any Roadster price or delivery estimate as settled. The figures below are retained from the original coverage and should not replace the manufacturer’s current written terms.
Can you order one in the UK?
Not clearly, yet. Tesla reopened Roadster reservations through an updated configurator with a $50,000 deposit. One report after the reveal names the US, Canada and China; none we found confirms the UK. Tesla's UK site has listed the Roadster before, so check it directly rather than relying on social media posts. The Rocket version is invite only and Tesla says it is not offered in all regions.
UK price: what is known
| Figure | Source | How much to trust it |
|---|---|---|
| $50,000 deposit | Tesla configurator, as reported | Confirmed for reopened reservations; UK not confirmed |
| About £151,000 base | UK car-site estimate | Not from Tesla; an estimate |
| About £185,000 Founders | UK car-site estimate | Not from Tesla; an estimate |
| £4,000 + £34,000 deposit | Tesla's older UK reservation page | An older offer, before the redesign |
| $200,000 base (US) | Tesla's 2017 announcement | Out of date; the car has changed |
If Tesla prices the Roadster in dollars first, a UK price would also need to cover VAT at 20%, any import duty and Tesla's own UK pricing decisions, so a straight currency conversion will not be accurate. Our Tesla Roadster price guide covers the US figures.
Running costs to factor in
- Vehicle Excise Duty: electric cars in the UK now pay VED, and cars with a list price over the expensive-car threshold pay an extra annual supplement for several years.
- Insurance: likely to be very high for a car with sub-two-second 0-60 mph claims.
- Home charging: a wall charger if you do not already have one.
Will it be road legal in the UK?
Coverage of Tesla's specs says the Roadster is not approved for public roads at this stage, and thrusters are new ground for road approval in the UK and Europe. The Performance version, without thrusters listed in Tesla's specs, has the most straightforward path. Low-volume supercars often reach UK roads through small-series or individual vehicle approval. Our street-legal explainer covers this in more detail.
When could it arrive?
Production is planned at Giga Texas, with Elon Musk talking about 12 to 18 months after the demo. That points to 2027 or 2028 for the first cars, most likely in the US first. A UK date has not been given, and the Roadster has already slipped from its original 2020 target.
Bottom line for UK buyers
Treat any UK price you see as a guess until Tesla publishes one. If you are serious, watch Tesla's UK site for reservations and read the deposit terms carefully. For everything Tesla announced, see our new Tesla Roadster summary.
A converted dollar amount is not a UK quotation
An exchange-rate calculation does not establish which equipment, delivery costs, taxes or registration expenses a local seller includes. Keep those items separate when comparing an imported vehicle with a car officially supplied in the UK. Use current official tax and customs guidance for the transaction you are considering.
If the seller cannot yet provide a UK quotation, write unknown beside the total. A precise-looking estimate can make an incomplete offer seem more certain than it is. Ask which business would take payment and which agreement would govern the sale before transferring a reservation from another market in your budget.
Ask about support as well as steering position
A prospective owner should ask where servicing and repairs would take place, who supplies unusual parts and how the warranty applies in the intended country. These are ordinary buyer questions, not evidence that any particular arrangement exists for the new Roadster.
Likewise, check charging compatibility and the documents an insurer would need. Do not buy charging equipment on the assumption that a prototype's appearance establishes the final vehicle connection or requirements. Wait for the applicable owner information and obtain qualified installation advice when a vehicle specification is confirmed.
Distinguish an arrival estimate from a handover commitment
A production target describes a plan. A local allocation, an accepted order and a delivery appointment are different steps. When reading an update, ask which step it addresses and which country it covers. A date associated with one market cannot simply be copied into a UK buying timeline.
Save correspondence about cancellation, delays and regional availability with the reservation agreement. If import or approval work falls to the buyer, seek specialist advice before committing funds. Check the relevant UK vehicle authority for the current approval route and registration requirements. This is general purchasing context; it adds no new UK launch date, price or legal prediction for the Roadster.
Frequently asked questions
Should I buy a home charger before a UK order is confirmed?
Wait for the applicable vehicle requirements and obtain qualified installation advice. A prototype or overseas article does not establish the final charging arrangements for a locally supplied car.
Does a US production target establish a UK handover date?
No. Production, regional allocation and a customer delivery appointment are separate steps. Ask the seller which stage its statement covers and keep market-specific dates separate.
Who should confirm import-related charges?
Use current official customs and tax guidance for the actual transaction, with professional advice where needed. An old currency conversion or foreign price cannot settle a UK import budget.
Can a foreign reservation be assumed to include UK delivery?
No. Ask the seller to confirm the destination, contracting business and delivery arrangements in writing. The applicable agreement decides what the reservation covers.
