How Does the Tesla Roadster Fly? The Thrusters Explained

By Samveg Jain·18 October 2026·Updated ·5 min read

Quick answer

The Tesla Roadster uses cold gas thrusters, developed with SpaceX engineers, that release compressed gas to push the car. Tesla says they generate four to five times the force the tires can and uses them to stabilize the car when it leaves the ground. Tesla has not published how long or how high it can fly.

An empty moorland road runs toward the horizon beneath an expansive, softly clouded sky.

The original Roadster coverage describes cold gas thrusters releasing stored gas to push the car, rather than wings producing sustained flight. A brief airborne demonstration leaves questions about repeatability, operating limits and customer use unanswered.

It uses thrusters, not wings or rotors

The Roadster has no wings, propellers or rotors. Instead, it uses cold gas thrusters, a technology spacecraft rely on for small, precise movements. A tank stores gas under high pressure. When a valve opens, the gas rushes out of a nozzle, and the reaction pushes the car in the opposite direction. Nothing burns, which keeps the system simpler and cooler than a rocket engine.

Tesla says the thruster system can produce four to five times the force the tires can, and that all-electric actuators handle the micro adjustments. The project was described at the event as a collaboration between Tesla and the project engineers.

Why it is "stabilization", not flight

Tesla's own wording is careful. It describes the thrusters as in-flight stabilization: they keep the car level and controlled when it leaves the ground, for example off a ramp, and help it land. Holding a car of this size in the air for long would need a very large supply of gas. Cold gas systems carry a limited amount, so airborne moments are likely to be short. Tesla has not published a flight time, a maximum height or the conditions the demo needed.

How it drove upside down is a different system

The moment where the car stuck to the underside of a curved ramp used a fan and ground-sealing system rather than the thrusters. The fan pulls air from under the car, so the air pressure above presses it onto the surface. We explain the physics in how did the Tesla Roadster drive upside down?

Will owners be able to fly it?

That is the big unknown. The Rocket version is invite only and not offered in every region, and coverage of Tesla's spec sheet says the Roadster is not approved for public roads at this stage. Using thrusters on a public road raises safety and approval questions that regulators have not dealt with before. Read will the Tesla Roadster be street legal? for the rules in the US and Europe.

Quick recap

  • Cold gas thrusters release pressurized gas to push the car.
  • Thrust has rear thrusters; Rocket has thrusters around the car.
  • Tesla calls it stabilization, not sustained flight.
  • No flight time, height or road approval has been published.

Read the word flying carefully

An object leaving a ramp is airborne even without a system that can keep it aloft. To judge a claim about controlled flight, ask what force supports the vehicle, how its attitude is controlled and how the sequence ends. A short clip may show an outcome without revealing which parts depend on the launch ramp or prepared landing area.

Do not estimate an airborne range by multiplying an apparent speed by a guessed duration. Camera angles, edits and missing measurements make that an unreliable way to produce a specification. Where a manufacturer has not supplied a value, leave the value unknown.

Questions that matter beyond the spectacle

A prospective owner would need to know how a system is prepared for use, what inspection it requires and how it is restored for another operation. Stored gas is finite, but that general fact does not establish a refill schedule, servicing cost or number of uses for this car.

Ask how a feature is disabled when inappropriate, what warnings the driver receives and which operating conditions are permitted. These are normal questions for unusual vehicle equipment. They should be answered by product documentation and approval information rather than assumptions based on a staged event.

A demonstration is one step in the evidence chain

An announcement says what a manufacturer intends or claims. A demonstration can show a selected action under selected conditions. Independent testing asks whether a result can be reproduced with a stated method. Delivery shows that a customer has received a particular specification. None of these stages automatically supplies the evidence for the next.

When following updates, keep separate notes for hardware claims, test results, road approval and ordering information. A change in the reservation page does not validate a flight claim, and a new video does not settle registration. Use official manufacturer material to check current statements, and the appropriate transport authority for permission to use a feature on public roads.

Frequently asked questions

Can a clip reveal how much gas was used?

No. A recording without instrumented measurements cannot establish gas consumption or the number of repeat operations. Leave those values unknown unless the manufacturer publishes applicable data.

Does leaving a ramp mean it can take off from level ground?

No. Those are different claims requiring different evidence. Do not infer a level-ground capability from the sequence described in the original coverage.

Could a reservation guarantee access to a demonstrated feature?

Only the applicable agreement and supplied specification can establish what is included. Promotional footage alone is not a substitute for written equipment and permitted-use terms.

Does an airborne demonstration establish a safe landing system?

It shows the landing in that sequence. It does not by itself establish behaviour across different surfaces, faults or weather conditions. Those questions need documented testing and operating instructions.
