Day 1–2: the battery starts to slip
Modern cars are never fully "off." The alarm, the clock and the electronics all draw a small standby current. A healthy battery handles a week easily, but an older one can quietly drop below the level needed to crank the engine.
Day 2–3: the tyres settle
With the full weight of the car resting on the same patch of rubber, tyres can develop temporary flat spots and lose a little pressure. Usually it works itself out after a short drive, but correct inflation before you leave helps.
Day 3–5: moisture and fuel
Overnight temperature swings create condensation. Fuel is fine for a week, but a nearly empty tank leaves more room for moisture — so it is worth parking with a reasonable amount of fuel in it.
Day 3 onwards: something moves in
This is the one almost nobody plans for. A parked car is quiet, warm after the last drive, and full of sheltered nooks — which makes the engine bay an ideal home for a rat. The five-minute pre-parking checklist
- Clean the bay and cabin — no food, wrappers or leaves to attract or shelter rodents.
- Park smart — away from garbage, drains and bushes.
- Check tyre pressure — inflate to the recommended level.
- Leave some fuel in the tank — reduces condensation.
- Set up a rat deterrent — so the bay does not become a nest while you are gone.
