Start outside: the perimeter
- Walk the outer walls and note gaps around pipes, cables, AC lines and the base of doors
- Keep the area next to the house clear of garbage, firewood and dense clutter where rats shelter
- Trim vegetation touching the walls or roof — rats use it as a bridge
Kitchen
The number-one target, because of food. Do this:
- Seal gaps around the sink pipes and under cabinets with steel wool + sealant
- Store all food (including grains and pet food) in sealed steel or thick containers
- Take waste out nightly and use a lidded bin; wipe counters before bed
- Mesh any drain openings
Storerooms and utility areas
- Declutter — stacked boxes and bags are ideal nesting spots
